Begin by establishing your objectives-and make sure all members of the household agree. You don’t want to be wrestling with these issues when you’re viewing homes-this will create stress and confusion at a time when you need to be focused.

Where do you want live and what community characteristics do you prefer?
What type of house are you picturing? Size, condition and improvements are you picturing?
When do you want to move? Your purchase and/or sale to be completed?
How much of a financial commitment are you prepared to make?

If you’re also selling a home, you will need to decide which action to take first: buy your new home, or sell your current home. I’ve worked with several people in this situation, and I can tell you that the decision has serious consequences.

The wrong decision will impact your negotiating position, your time frame, and your lifestyle during the escrow period, and it could put a strain on your financial resources.

Discuss all your options before deciding what to do. You do not want to rush into this decision.
